Introduction to API
Have we RESTed long enough? Many developers have relied on API architecture like REST for almost 20 years, and advancements in HTTP/2 and HTTP/3 are making APIs more powerful and more flexible. Let's talk about different API types from an introductory level, and talk about their advantages and disadvantages, and why moving away from RESTful APIs might be the right choice for you.
The Federated Internet: Taking Back Control from Big Tech
The internet doesn’t have to be owned by Big Tech. This talk explores the vision of the federated internet—a decentralized, user-owned digital landscape where your data stays under your control. Through open protocols like ActivityPub, we can reimagine social media, messaging, and more, shifting power away from corporate giants and back to users. Drawing parallels to email’s open architecture, we’ll unpack how the federated model works, the projects leading the charge (Mastodon, PeerTube, Lemmy), and why tech workers are uniquely positioned to rebuild the internet for privacy, ownership, and freedom. The future isn’t a corporate playground—it’s ours to shape.
