Talk Descriptions

Why you shouldn't use else, most of the time by Brenden Ehlers

When learning how to program, we're taught early on that the if/else if/else control flow mechanism is essential to writing software. But, in my professional experience, you rarely need to write else, instead relying on other methods of controlling the flow of the program. In this talk, I'll elaborate on what I think is the better way to handle control flow, being guard clauses, and some of the exceptions to the rule (when you can use else).

Dev Scrimmage: When it’s time to practice the whole job by Marlena Baker

There’s thousands of tutorials, exercises, and projects available to practice writing good code. However, there’s so much more to being a great developer than just writing code. From project management to testing and deployment, it’s good to run through it start to end on occasion. I’ll be using an example to demonstrate how to build your next coding practice into a scrimmage for working as a developer.
