[COURSE DESCRIPTION]:

We'll use Linux, Bash, Git, Gitlab, F5/Nginx Docker image, and AWS to create minimum viable DevOps continuous integration pipelines on our laptops. This class is based on content created by Aaron Brown, systems engineer and VP of DevOps at Flowhub.com.

Also some talk about learning through community, collaboration, and the concept of teaching others as learning/career development.

Linux/Bash basics - the tildae, paths, tab completion, command history, variables, command substitution

Git and Gitlab - ssh keys / authentication, GitLab API, local git directory, git commands, git clone, working with repos, continuous integration features

Docker - terms, test, Dockerfile, Docker build, Docker run, make webserver w/ Docker

AWS cloud infrastructure on free tier - authentication, Elastic IP, Cloud Formation, EC2

Q: Who is this class for?

A: LEARNERS who are one or more of the following (no particular order):

- MID-CAREER IT PROS - update skill set, fill gaps, continuous learning

- TEACHERS OF IT OR ASPIRING - regardless of IT skill level, your interest is in the idea of teaching as a way of learning, networking with the like-minded

- DEVELOPERS - want or need to understand the IT infrastructure part of the equation better for career development

- CURIOUS - would like a gentle hands-on intro to determine if this is a good career path... don't want to rely solely on google or other online tutorials to figure that out

- TEAM MANAGERS - take or send someone to the class - even if not on the keyboard as much, this will be beneficial

[NOTES]: a little experience with linux basics prior to class helps but is not necessary

employers will often pay for this kind of learning if asked

What we're about

The Software Freedom School exists to teach the world how to use and why to choose free software.

David L. Willson and Heather L. Willson started SFS in 2013 to help teach the world free software and to feed the whole student, mind (techie classes), body (delicious food), and spirit (libre software). We host Software Freedom First Saturday at the SFS HQ or Englewood Public Library: From 11am - 3pm you can learn about free software.

There are other events throughout the month and activities you can become involved in: Linux Camp and Study Groups to name a couple.

Our ideal members, via Meetup, are people, just like you, looking to learn more about freedom in the software community. It could be a new graduate, a person looking to change careers, someone who is super savvy but has been using the proprietary software for too long!

We are a community based company in the Denver area. We want to partner with hacker-spaces, maker-spaces, LUG's, small businesses, entrepreneurs, and small, free schools like us. Our goal is to teach the world how to use and why to choose free software and it would be wonderful if you joined us!
